Efficient Stepwise Selection in Decomposable Models

چکیده
In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for performing stepwise selection in the class of decomposable models. We focus on the forward selection procedure, but we also discuss how backward selection and the combination of the two can be performed efficiently. The main contributions of this paper are (1) a simple characterization for the edges that can be added to a decomposable model while retaining its decomposability and (2) an efficient algorithm for enumerating all such edges for a given decomposable model in O(n) time, where n is the number of variables in the model. We also analyze the complexity of the overall stepwise selection procedure (which includes the complexity of enumerating eligible edges as well as the complexity of deciding how to “progress”). We use the KL divergence of the model from the saturated model as our metric, but the results we present here extend to many other metrics as well.

Structure Learning with Nonparametric Decomposable Models
We present a novel approach to structure learning for graphical models. By using nonparametric estimates to model clique densities in decomposable models, both discrete and continuous distributions can be handled in a unified framework. Also, consistency of the underlying probabilistic model is guaranteed. Model selection is based on predictive assessment, with efficient algorithms that allow f...
متن کاملTwo DEA Models Employment in IS Project Selection for Iran Ministry of Commerce
Selection of an appropriate set of Information System (IS) projects is a critical business activity which is very helpful to all organizations. In this paper, after describing real IS project selection problem of Iran Ministry of Commerce (MOC), we introduce two Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models. Then, we show applicability of introduced models for identifying most efficient IS project fro...
متن کاملBayesian inference for Gaussian graphical models beyond decomposable graphs
Bayesian inference for graphical models has received much attention in the literature in recent years. It is well known that when the graph G is decomposable, Bayesian inference is significantly more tractable than in the general non-decomposable setting. Penalized likelihood inference on the other hand has made tremendous gains in the past few years in terms of scalability and tractability. Ba...
متن کاملHigh-dimensional Graphical Model Search with gRapHD R Package
This paper presents the R package gRapHD for efficient selection of highdimensional undirected graphical models. The package provides tools for selecting trees, forests and decomposable models minimizing information criteria such as AIC or BIC, and for displaying the independence graphs of the models. It has also some useful tools for analysing graphical structures. It supports the use of discr...
متن کاملOn model selection consistency of M-estimators with geometrically decomposable penalties
Penalized M-estimators are used in diverse areas of science and engineering to fit high-dimensional models with some low-dimensional structure. Often, the penalties are geometrically decomposable, i.e. can be expressed as a sum of support functions over convex sets. We generalize the notion of irrepresentable to geometrically decomposable penalties and develop a general framework for establishi...
